Following Rafael Nadal’s late withdrawal, Zverev is now the highest-ranked player left in the Acapulco draw, but his route to a potential title remains tricky with Juan Martin del Potro, Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman all in his half… He obviously must first get past Delray Beach finalist Gojowczyk before contemplating matches against the aforementioned top-20 stars.

Playing his first match in Acapulco, Zverev took down Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday night, needing just an hour and 17 minutes to move past the American. A solid serving performance provided the fulcrum for Zverev’s win, as he converted over 70% of points on first and second serves, while saving the only break point he faced early in the second set. By contrast, Zverev carved out 10 break chances on McDonald’s serve, converting two, one in each set, in the 6-3 7-5 victory.

The 20-year-old, winner of five ATP World Tour titles last year, is yet to stamp his mark on the tour this season, following early exits at the Australian Open and Rotterdam. Zverev’s Grand Slam woes continued in Melbourne as he crumbled in the final set of his third-round meeting with eventual semi-finalist, Hyeon Chung, while he suffered another tame exit in his next ATP event in Rotterdam, falling in straight sets to Italian veteran, Andreas Seppi after beating David Ferrer in the opening round.

He did enjoy a fine weekend in the Davis Cup, beating Alex De Minaur in five, and more impressively, Nick Kyrgios in straight sets to fire Germany past Australia, and into the quarter finals of the team event. An individual quarter final is on the line when he takes on countryman, Gojowczyk on Wednesday. CLICK HERE NOW
